‘Space is the Place’
“In an effort to bring unity and equality to African-Americans, an interstellar traveller and musician lands on earth and duels with an evil overlord for the souls of people.”
Space is the place sounds like Bergmans ‘The 7th seal’ and looks like a blacksploitation movie. However, Sun Ra (more noted for his Jazz compositions) hoped to do more than capitalise on the trends of the day, perhaps
that’s why he never signed off on the movie.
Critically brilliant moments occur when performance and documentary merge to create powerful sets and
situations, like when the kids in the youth club ask the space mystic traveller Sun Ra ‘wat it is?’
If you ever felt undervalued or out of place, the ideas in this film may resonate with you. Space is the place
reminds us that identity is not fixed, we can always creatively reinvent ourselves beyond rigid categories. Thanks Ruth

Little update from the Tehidy residency. Some new Little update from the Tehidy residency. Some new practices and some old, all with a focus on using natures available resources to reinvent the practice. Costume and mask making, building a darkroom and camera obscura. Working with groups like @womenscentrecornwall and @penleefamilyproject. Making cordage from nettles and using plant based chemistry.

Are you involved in a local group with a cause? As Are you involved in a local group with a cause? As part of the creative residency at Tehidy we are putting together a day of radical reimaginings for a better future.

From 3PM on Saturday 14th June we will have a day that celebrates the changes in the seasons and our right to create, connect, protest and live well.

'Woodlands are places of refuge for dissenters, free speech flourishes in spaces outside the control of formal institutions. While nature witnesses every step we take, alternative underground movements have used woodland to discuss strategies for political change.'

We invite local groups to come together, share their vision for the future and inspire us with powerful words from the past that reflect their mission.

This might be a poem, a speech, lyrics from a song or any words of hope and justice that shape their cause. Bring a banner and stake your claim to the soil.

It’s a networking day with music, spoken word performance and food, come along and say a few words.

Please get in touch or share, get involved.
